An Update on the Farm-to-Table Project Launch in South Sudan

The project is gaining momentum in Rajaf West, Juba. This innovative initiative seeks to revolutionize local farming by focusing on women-owned small farming businesses while promoting community empowerment and environmental sustainability.

The project’s core objective remains unchanged: to empower the local community through the cultivation of short maturity crops and foster a circular economy by integrating organic waste into farming practices. Special attention is given to providing fresh, quality vegetables, particularly those susceptible to quality deterioration in lengthy supply chains, such as okras, cucumbers, and aubergines.

With a strategic focus on crops with short maturity periods, the project not only ensures a quick supply of fresh produce but also significantly reduces food miles and associated CO2 emissions. Importantly, it addresses the issue of food waste by minimizing sorting activities for highly perishable items, aiming to cut the import of fresh fruits and vegetables by 50%.

The update reveals the progress made since the project’s inception, showcasing various activities, including soil analysis, tilling, nursery establishment, irrigation setup, farm securing, and the creation of compost pits. The trial phase, set to run until June 2024, will guide future expansions based on operational risk assessments.

This ambitious undertaking, launched in late 2023, promises not only to guarantee quality produce for consumers but also to contribute significantly to environmental sustainability and community development. By empowering women in small farming businesses, promoting circular farming practices, and reducing the carbon footprint associated with long supply chains, the Farm-to-Table Project stands as a beacon of positive change in the local agricultural landscape.
